SOME SCAM STATISTICS AND ADVICE

Its no secret that AfrikaDating has more than its fair share of scammers. This is partly due to our niche and the fact that some criminals are well established in certain territories and have an established system. We are very strict with people mass-mailing and recipients get warning of cut-and-paste messages, some message text will get an individual banned immediately, but its very hard to tell with some members if they are who they say they are.

Here are some pointers:

• Is there a picture? Does it look like a model shot? Or is it shot in a more traditional African background? There ARE some stunningly beautiful women on this site who are genuine. But some pictures are not and have been stolen from elsewhere. If you find such a thing and can provide evidence, then please inform us and we can have the profile deleted.
• Is the picture VERY small? It might have been stolen from another dating site - a thumbnail shot. If you can match this with elsewhere then also let us know.
• How To Interpret Our IP Data. You will notice on messages that we match someone's stated location with their location as revealed by their IP address. There are a number of bona fide reasons why this information may not be an accurate guide on the basic honesty of a member. Firstly, people travel, and access their account from countries they travel to. The information is updated and then there appears an anomaly. Secondly, our IP database is 98% accurate world wide, but is less so in Africa. This is because ISPs provide services in different countries. Someone from the UK can connect from a roaming mobile phone in Kenya and it will still show UK. A Nigerian working for an American company in Nigeria will sometimes use an American ISP. Proxy servers are widespread, particularly common anomalies are Kenyans connecting through an Israeli service. Often they really are in Kenya its just the internet cafe they use is a franchise run through an Israeli satellite provider. And one country sometimes supplies its neighbours with internet services.

  So don't take the IP data as gospel. DO NOT go accusing somone of lying if they are Kenyan and connecting via Israel. Nor a Nigerian who connects through a South African address. The ones to really suspect are those who claim to be in North America (i.e. they are claiming to live in the rich west), but their IP data indicates that they are in Africa. These ones are, in our experience, real scammers. A typical example is: they will offer you a job in Europe, flights and visas all in, until you hand over your processing fee to an agent in West Africa who then promptly disappears.

And then there's raw statistics. In our experience most scammers on this site are from West Africa. Its sad but true. But do not jump to conclusions that the "Nigerian Scam" operates solely out of Nigeria.

Below is a table of live statistics which indicate the number of scammers we have caught compared to the number of registrations from that country. As you can see, scammers can come from anywhere. While we may have caught 214 scammers from Nigeria, this is only 14.81% of the signups from that country.

These are the full stats. Senegal is banned completely from this site as we found virtualy ALL signups from Senegal were scam attempts. So the 100% is a bit unrepresentative.
