Travelling out of Africa
This section is intended for Africans who wish to leave their country and travel abroad. The advice is quite different compared to Westerners who wish to travel to Africa, because a whole lot of additional bureaucracy suddenly comes into play, and as an African you are often treated with suspicion rather than as a valuable asset.
This article is written largely from the perspective of travelling to the UK, although similar rules will operate in other western countries. This is not intended to be an authoritative guide on the subject and for detailed information you should read the detailed information available on the internet. This guide, however, discusses some of the issues its worth thinking about before you decide to travel.
Unlike visas travelling to an African country from the West, which are often merely a source of revenue for the country concerned, visas to countries like the UK are piled up with additional bureaucracy and politics from the country you wish to go to. Unlike just turning up on the border and getting a visa, you have to get a visa in advance, from the embassy or consulate in your home country and present a convincing case for going to that country. Basically you have to match the criteria that that country operates. We'll go through some of the considerations as we go.
The type of trip you intend to take
A lot will depend on the type of visit you intend to make. Do you want to go on holiday? Do you have family in the destination country and your visiting? Do you want to go and look for work? Are you a refugee? Are you going to settle with a fiancée or partner? Do you want to study? There are various considerations that apply depending on what you want to achieve. Whatever you do, do not buy a flight ticket without having got your visa already. If your visa is refused you've wasted money both on the flight and the visa fee. So hold your horses.
